The Worshipful Company of Upholders is one of the old Livery companies of the City of London. The first Master was elected in 1360 and the Company received its first Royal Charter from Charles 1st in 1626. The term Upholder is the origin of the modern word Upholstery. More broadly in 1747 it was said "the genius of the Upholder ...is to be a conniseur of everything in the house". Today the modern livery is closely associated with the Upholstery, Soft Furnishing and Undertaking crafts. Today its stated purpose: is to uphold the Livery of the Worshipful Company of Upholders, ensuring it continues to flourish. Upholding the craft of the Upholder and through charitable giving, uphold individuals and organisations connected with the craft and livery. The Livery has two charities: The Peter Jackson Charity which traces its origins back to 1707 when Peter Jackson made a donation of £800 to be used to support "Necessitous Upholders". Today this provides pensions for up to 20 pensioners from the upholstery and soft furnishings trade and the surplus supports City and Service charities. In 1998 a second charity was formed in memory of Past Master Neville Hayman who was the Livery's Hon. Treasurer for 49 years. This charity provides funds for education particularly to support students and apprentices in our trades.
