WriterCoach Connection (WCC) believes that critical thinking and clear writing skills are essential for a young person to succeed in school and beyond. With that in mind, WriterCoach Connection sends rigorously trained volunteer coaches into East Bay classrooms and after-school programs to help and encourage students find their voices and communicate their ideas clearly, powerfully and eloquently. WriterCoach Connection is dedicated to helping all youth of all backgrounds and circumstances find their identity and discover their potential as clear, thoughtful communicators. Founded in 2001, the WriterCoach Connection program began in Berkeley, California with 35 volunteers working with 180 students at Berkeley High School. Subsequently, the program spread to all the Berkeley middle schools, then to adjacent Albany, and then to Oakland, El Cerrito, and Richmond. Each year, more than 700 volunteer writer coaches collaborate with 40 teachers and work with more than 2,000 students in four East Bay school districts. Volunteer coaches come from a wide variety of background and undergo a rigorous six-hour training program to be writer coaches. WCC is not a remedial program. Every student in a given grade level is coached, regardless of skill level, and meets with their coach from eight to thirteen times during the school year. Coaches are trained to meet a student wherever he or she is with a given school assignment. The WCC website, at www.writercoachconnection.org, offers full information about the program.
