Food & Beverages - Portland, Oregon, United States
What is Yaupon? Yaupon Holly is our only native, caffeinated plant found in North America. While for centuries, the Timucua, Cherokee, and Seminole peoples cultivated and drank this useful plant, it has only recently been noticed by more and more wide ranging tea enthusiasts. Is Yaupon Healthy? Yaupon is not just a good dose of energy. The drink contains a variety of compounds known to reduce blood pressure, increase focus, and decrease the risks for cancer and heart disease. What are the environmental impacts of Yaupon? Overall, the environmental impact of cultivating and shipping our wild Yaupon is low. As it grows abundantly (sometimes too abundantly for our neat landscapers) in the Southeastern United States, it can be cultivated without any need for pesticides or deforestation. It's weedy nature make it drought-resistant and allows us to grow it without irrigation. Plus, since we cultivate Yaupon here at home, it can travel to you with a smaller carbon footprint than any imported tea.
