Government Administration - Changsha Shi, Hunan Sheng, China
In the winter of 2014, my friend asked me whether I wanted to solve a problem: the private international education industry in China. Education – learning – is something I've always been passionate about, so I agreed. We thus made plans to try and disrupt an industry known for its price gouging, wanton fear mongering, unethical practices, and lack of professionalism. We started with a few thousand dollars, a 900 sq. ft. office, and a message -- that the only way to truly succeed in life was to make honest, hard work a habit. Hopes were high, but we only managed to attract one client in the first 3 months of opening our doors. People agreed with our message, but no one was willing to take a risk on us when cheating seemed so easy. The only thing that kept us going was the fear of failure -- fear of failing not in business, but each other. Every month, we wondered whether our business would exist the next month. Somehow, we were able to stay afloat, and by the end of our first year, our loyal clients were going out of their way to refer their friends to our humble establishment. We were able to pull in enough profit to gamble on a "princely" 3,700 sq. ft. office. The second year was a different kind of struggle. We experienced the growing pains of a small-business trying to mature into a small-sized corporation. There were countless sleepless nights as we scrambled to correct our management mistakes while honoring our commitment to unparalleled service. However, with every mistake, we learned something valuable to slowly change the company from a two-man operation to a team effort. We ended our second year with a close-knit, highly capable team and $300,000 in revenue – a miniscule amount in the grand scheme of things, but a monumental accomplishment for our team.Yilian Education Technology is driven by amazingly talented, ambitious, and motivated individuals.
