Adams became a naturalized Japanese citizen and samurai and lived in Hemi, Yokosuka. His letters are thought to be the basis for the story of the Lilliputians in Gulliver's Travels)- Kanrin Maru Festival (commemorating the first crossing of the Pacific by a Japanese warship in 1860, the first official Japanese diplomatic mission to the U.S. The Kanrin Maru sailed from Uraga, Yokosuka)- Perry Festival (commemorating the landing of Commodore Matthew Perry in Kurihama, Yokosuka in 1853, the beginning of U.S.-Japanese relations)- Verny-Oguri Festival (commemorating the cooperation between Japanese Lord Oguri and French engineer Leonce Verny in the 19th-century building of the Yokosuka Naval Arsenal, an early and foundational cooperation in French-Japanese relations)
