Nonprofit Organization Management - Atlanta, Georgia, United States
We connect high school students from low income backgrounds with people and experiences that help them develop 21st century skills and ensure success in college and the global workforce. Abi Dairo, YouCAN's Founder and current Board Member witnessed an adult tell a young man at his college entrance exam site that he couldn't make it. She knew at that moment that something had to be done to not only lift up the hopes and dreams of young men like the one she saw, but also help address deep educational disparities in her own community. So YouCAN started with the belief that regardless of your background, you can succeed, get a solid education and achieve your goals and dreams. We started doing summer programs in 2006. We gathered youth, parents, college admission officers, college students all in one place to go over every step involved in the college admissions process. After several workshops and events in New York and at a Local High school in GA we evaluated our efforts and feedback and realized it was not enough to just provide information, we had to inspire, inform and activate each students desire to succeed in life. In 2013, our goal is to launch a pilot program this summer in Atlanta, GA with 50+ students of low income background, starting a journey of connecting with people and experiences that will help them develop 21st century skills & be better prepared for college success and a global workforce.
