Mental Health Care - Auckland, Auckland, New Zealand
Every year over 500 people die by suicide, with about one third in Auckland. Another 150,000 people think about taking their own life, around 50,000 make a plan to take their own life and around 20,000 attempt suicide. New Zealand has one of the highest rates of youth suicide in the world and the work of the Youth in Transition Charitable Trust (YIT) is to turn this around by providing proven programmes for the individual aimed at helping them to live a rich, full and meaningful life.YIT operates as a registered charity (Reg No. CC53503). It has functioned as a suicide prevention service since 2014 and has helped 158 young adults, aged between 10-24, from the Hibiscus Coast/North Shore area, who have either self-referred or who have been referred through Police, Victim Support (VS), GP's, Rodney Mental Health, Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB), North Shore Hospital (NSH), HBC Youth Centre (HBC), Grandparents raising Grandchildren and Heart for Youth, (H4Y).The success of the program is based on how it has made a difference in the lives of the at risk youths who have used the services. A key component of this project is in being able to provide a safe place for our young people to talk with a trained professional about the issues that are concerning them and to equip them with valuable life and coping skills, enabling them to make better life choices. We offer an initial 12 free counselling sessions with a registered counsellor, followed by ongoing support from a team of professional mentors for up to a year. In addition we have a "Life Skills" peer support group which is held once a week where our young people can come together to connect and share with others. Due to the need for such a service within the community the work by the charity is in need of stronger financial backing. YIT will need to establish sources of funding for the paid staff. Currently it has one full time registered Counsellor and 5 part time volunteer staff.
