YUMSO is an all-volunteer student organization founded in 1984 to help and serve York's growing mature student population. In 2015 that role expanded to supporting student parents. YUMSO serves students attending any of York University's colleges and campuses, and for those learning remotely. Originally founded with the role of mature students helping each other understand the complexities of the university, its role expanded to include helping mature students adjust to and enjoy the back-to-school experience, offer mentorship and advice, provide a quiet space to meet and study, and help establish a social and communications network. This is a great time to be a mature student at York University. There are approximately 25,000 students at York that are age 21 or older (50% of the student body), and 27% of the student body are aged 25+. About 9,000 students are over the age of 25.
