The mission of Zawadi By Youth is to foster a greater awareness of microfinance in the youth demographic and to fund loans to entrepreneurs in developing nations who have little or no other access to capital. Being one of the first high school microfinance organizations in the country, we began in 2008 and are completely student-run with 501(c)(3) status. We specifically target our fellow youth in this cause to enroll them in the spirit of giving that not only betters the lives of the less fortunate, but also unites us as a community and educates others in the possibilities of social business. Zawadi by Youth has lent over $30,000 to entrepreneurs through partnerships with organizations such as Microplace, Kiva, Wokai, and Fonzoke. To spread awareness, Zawadi has hosted various microfinance events both inside and outside of the Riverdale school community, including speeches at other schools about microfinance, a presentation at a Credit Suisse Panel, as well as a presentation at the 2010 TEDx Youth conference. We have traveled to San Francisco and Mumbai to meet with organizations at the forefront of social business and to see its impact first-hand.We would like to help other groups "fast forward" through the long trial and error period that comes with starting a student-run group by providing access to our website, tax-exempt status, partnerships, insightful experiences, and operational funds.
