Nonprofit Organization Management - Bulawayo, Bulawayo, Zimbabwe
Zimkids provides a safety net and tools for the future for AIDS orphans growing up in a country ravaged by AIDS, corruption, and violence. We provide 200 orphans in Pumula North, Bulawayo, with educational opportunities, recreational activities, food, medical care, and skills training. Our day-to-day operations are largely self-funded, based on the work of the children themselves. They make dolls and wire toys – as they do for their own pleasure – which the chairman of our board sells when he speaks at schools, churches, synagogues and community groups. Direct donations pay for special projects that include schoolbooks, outreach activities, medical aid, and caregiver self-sustainability.In March 2011, we broke ground on our new center, with four of our 18-year-olds – two girls and two boys – receiving on-the-job training in all areas of construction. The site, which opened in July 2012, houses a Resource Center with a kitchen, clinic, library, classroom and sewing area; a computer training center; a market garden complete with drip irrigation technology; and sports fields.
