Higher Education - Halle (Saale), Sachsen-Anhalt, Germany
The ZIRS is an umbrella organization for all those institutions and individual scholars of various disciplines at the Martin Luther University whose academic interests and research activities in one way or another concern the listed non-European areas. The member institutions of ZIRS are the Seminars of the Oriental Institute, the Seminars for Social Anthropology, Indian Studies, Japanese Studies, Oriental Archaeology as well as Economic Geography. One of the main tasks of the ZIRS is to provide a shared platform for the diversity of regional expertise available in Halle, which is tied to a multitude of disciplinary perspectives (such as history, ancient history, linguistics, literature, the social and political sciences and the humanities), and to encourage and facilitate academic exchange between them. Interdisciplinary cooperation between these various regional studies and the so-called mainstream disciplines can therefore be usefully mobilized to inspire and coordinate shared research activities grouped together according to their overarching thematic, theoretical and methodological approaches.Further activities by the ZIRS include the organization of guest lectures and international workshops as well as the publication of the by now well-established Occasional Papers series, "Orientwissenschaftliche Hefte".
