Food Production - London, England, United Kingdom
It all started a year ago when I attended a lecture about edible insects at the Veterinary Faculty...Before that I wanted to become a small animal surgeon. The idea of edible insects inspired me and I started researching insects as a possible source of food for mankind on a large scale. The Veterinary Faculty supported me in my quest, providing me with a mentor. In the autumn of 2014 I bought a small pack of mealworms from the local pet store and started to breed them in an aquarium in my room. I was surprised at their biological structure and at how easy it is to grow them. The idea of growing my own source of protein took me over. When I first tasted them I was astonished. They were delicious, but people in general weren't as excited as I was. So I ground them up in a fine flour and made pancakes. Totally different story! We even had a pancake day at the faculty and both the students and professors loved them! That's when it all started to come together...We believe that well-being starts with good nutrition. We believe that the traditional food industry is not sustainable and that green and sustainable agriculture is about to become a reality. We are inspired by an ancient approach to eating. That means returning to simple, non-processed food without processed protein, trans fats and refined sugars. This is a diet similar to what humans consumed while we were still evolving, thousands of years ago. Prehistoric man found or hunted his food. Insects were an important source of nutrients and had the role of ancient food supplements. With civilization came a fast transition to food that doesn't really suit our bodies. This lead to a global rise in diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and increased blood pressure. We believe that well-being starts with good nutrition.- Domen Krč, CEO
