Zosseo Overland Support is a nonprofit organization based in Seattle, WA. Our mission is to connect essential dental services with the most underserved communities in East Africa.Every day in East Africa, millions of people seek relief from oral pain and discomfort. Cavities and gum disease among low-income children and adults often go untreated due to financial barriers or become exacerbated using home remedies. The pain associated with poor oral health can cause children to miss out on educational activities and adults to miss work. In turn, these issues cause social immobility, reduce income and greatly diminish joy in life.According to the World Health Organization, for every dentist in Africa there are 150,000 people; in many parts of East Africa oral health care is simply inaccessible. We believe East Africa needs a cost-effective and sustainable plan for intervention that impacts people now, regardless of location or socioeconomic status.Zosseo Overland Support, equipped with an all-terrain vehicle as a base of operations in Kenya, offers a unique model for medical and non-medical professionals to help meet the oral health care needs of underserved rural communities. Using a mobile method of service delivery, we can reliably traverse unpaved and sandy roads into the least accessible regions of East Africa, effectively reaching those who cannot reach us. We aim to enable East African communities to value good oral health and provide them with the knowledge and tools to prevent oral disease. In partnership with international nonprofit organizations and local health leaders, we offer screenings, preliminary exams, extractions and occasionally restorations, all at no cost to the patient. Additionally, we integrate educational components into our programs that benefit both healthcare professionals and the general public.
