As of January 2015, the platform had more than 100 registered charities, 40,000 active donors and 3 million fans on weibo. Donations for charitable causes are made by users via the website or using a dedicated mobile app, with 0% transaction fee. The name 51give comes from the Chinese phrase 我要给予 wǒ yào gěi yǔ ("I want to give"), the first two words of which sound similar to wǔ yào, "five one". This wordplay has also become the company's slogan: "I Want To Give".
