SEEAL's MISSION: to support our partners' capacity to provide quality environmental education and stewardship in Southeastern Massachusetts. The oldest flagship fund of the Community Foundation of Southeastern Massachusetts, SEEAL (Southeastern Environmental Education Alliance) is a regional leader in environmental education, stewardship, and activism—a coalition of nonprofits, public agencies, schools, and universities. We are governed by our 25 Lead Partners who are each represented on our Board of Directors. Regional collaborators also include businesses and local governments.Launched in 1997, SEEAL has acted as an umbrella organization, and has applied for and provided over $1.75 million in grants to local organizations in Southeastern MA. Most recently, SEEAL administered a two-year, $236,000 grant made to the City of New Bedford, by the EPA in 2008, titled "Sustainable New Bedford." Small grants were awarded to 43 different organizations, for 30 sustainability-related, collaborative, educational projects in the City of New Bedford—over 2400 hours of service were performed, reaching more than 13,000 people. SEEAL's strength and uniqueness lies in the ability and enthusiasm of our partners to envision programs that are beyond the capacity of their individual organizations, and to join in collaborative action for shared benefit. Current projects include the Climate Change Challenge, SouthCoast Energy Challenge, and SouthCoast Youth Conservation Corps.
