George Orwell believed in the moral power of language and understood the dangers that accompany its corruption. One of the world's most influential writers, Orwell was the visionary author of 'Animal Farm' and 'Nineteen Eighty-four', alongside his eyewitness, non-fiction classics 'Down and Out in Paris in London', 'The Road to Wigan Pier' and 'Homage to Catalonia'.The Orwell Foundation is inspired by this remarkable legacy. An independent charity, the Foundation celebrates honest writing and reporting, uncovers hidden lives, confronts uncomfortable truths and encourages all young people to think creatively and critically about the world around them. In doing so, we seek to promote Orwell's values of integrity, decency and fidelity to truth. The Foundation is home to The Orwell Prizes and The Orwell Youth Prize. The Orwell Prizes are the UK's most prestigious prize for political writing, rewarding the best politically engaged books, journalism and reporting each year. The Prizes also organise free public lectures and debates on issues of contemporary relevance. More a project than a prize, The Orwell Youth Prize works to help young people in schools and Universities all over the country, offering personal feedback to all entrants, and giving a public platform to our winning writers, as well as for the collective voice of the young people involved. The Orwell Foundation is based in UCL's Institute of Advanced Studies (IAS), which facilitates critical thinking across conventional disciplinary boundaries. UCL is also home to the Orwell Archive, the world's most comprehensive body of research material relating to George Orwell, and a centre for Orwell scholarship.
