The system utilizes a unique four-part treatment process. The wastewaters are applied to a packed biologically based bed reactor and filters through support structures of sawdust, humus, carbon media and rocks. Within these layers are aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, along with higher-level organisms such as rotifers and worms. The organic waste first undergoes bacterial degradation but in a later stage worms ingest the lower level residue along with other solids to ultimately form a low volume nutrient-rich humus and high-quality liquid discharge. In the final stage, the translucent liquid output is treated to reduce the fecal coliform bacteria before being discharged. The system can be described as a process for water treatment, which makes use of living organisms to break down and treat sewage and other wastes.
