Christian Moerlein founded his brewing company in Cincinnati's Over-the-Rhine neighborhood in 1853 with the goal of making the better beers he was missing from his former home in Germany. Within a few years, he had the largest brewery in Ohio. Though the company didn't survive Prohibition, the Christian Moerlein Brewing Co. remained legendary in the Ohio Valley Region. The Christian Moerlein Brewing Company was resurrected as a "better beer" in 1981 and has been a leader in the craft beer movement since that time. The Christian Moerlein Select Lager became the first American beer to certifiably pass the strict Reinheitsgebot, or Bavarian Purity Law of 1516.Today, Christian Moerlein operates in Cincinnati's historic Kaufaman Brewery, just blocks from where it was founded, in Over-the-Rhine. The brewery offers tours of the production facility, as well as the historic underground tunnels. The brewery taproom, located in the pre-Prohibition malting room, is open weekly, Friday through Sunday. -- Year-Round Brews --Moerlein O.T.R.
