PreK-8 English as a New Language Coordinator at Mott Haven Academy Charter School - Bronx, NY, US
Mott Haven Academy Charter School (Haven Academy) opened its doors in the Fall of 2008 in the South Bronx with a rigorous academic program and a highly structured and supportive school culture. While Haven Academy is comprised of students from many backgrounds, it is uniquely designed to meet the needs of at-risk students who are currently in the foster care and child welfare system. To meet the needs of our community, the school design includes a close partnership with one of the city's largest social service agencies, The New York Foundling. By co-locating the school and family support services, Haven Academy distinctly provides students and families a seamless continuum of care to maximize success. Our students learn that challenging life circumstances provide opportunities to learn, grow, and persevere. To learn more about our partnership, please click here. We offer students an educational program that helps kids achieve academic success, as well as social and emotional growth through an extended school day and school year, a small student to teacher ratio with two teachers in each room, access to family support services and a rich after school program led by The New York Foundling. Our after school program focuses on cultural enrichment and building self-confidence and social skills through activities like, Alvin Ailey Dance, Hip-Hop Dance, Yoga, African Drumming, Violin and Voice, Academic Tutoring and Community Service. Aligned with our school goal to actively engage parents and provide ongoing support for them, we also offer a wide variety of evening workshops for parents covering such topics as literacy, English language improvement, resume building and parenting classes. Haven Academy values families and their desire to provide a better future for our children. Our approach to educating kids is simple: When the barriers to learning are addressed and responded to appropriately, every child can achieve academically.
