John Colet School is a coeducational multi-faith school with engaged students inspired by enriched learning. One of the school's distinctive features is its emphasis on Mindfulness. We introduce all students to short, easy Mindfulness techniques - like resting quietly between activities, connecting with the present moment, giving attention to their work, their speech and to each other. One of the broader effects of this is the opening of the mind to creative thought, discussion based learning and open enquiry. This means we can broaden our curriculum to include Sanskrit and Latin, annual Shakespeare performances (John Bell, pictured above, is the Patron of our annual Shakespeare Festival) Choral multi-part Singing and other enrichment subjects. Most importantly, Mindfulness is demonstrated daily through the example of our teachers who also practice these techniques. We find that focused attention enhances a child's ability to learn. If a child is encouraged to give attention, then their acquisition of knowledge and skills is made easier, more efficient and more enjoyable. The school celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, and common feedback from graduates, now adults, is that they have the ability to ‘let go' of stresses and draw on an inner calmness and strength. It is envisaged that the school's Linked In profile will become a forum for John Colet School parents to connect with each other, enable the school to build closer ties with our parent community and allow greater interaction with each other.
