The relationship between Canada and Ireland is strong, far reaching and deeply rooted in history. Based on firmly held shared values, both counties share a vision for a society which is inclusive and tolerant, supportive of individual liberty and considerate of its responsibility to future generations. The ICUF was founded to make a positive contribution to society, through the promotion of such shared values, which it does through the organisation of scholarly exchange and related events, and the support of academic and research networks linking both countries. This will be done through the awarding of scholarships to individuals whose work fulfills one or more of the following criteria; - builds academic links - develops cultural understanding - leads to increased trade between Canada and Ireland - supports the development of the Irish language and linguistic diversity in both countries. The Foundation operates two principal programmes annually. The first is the Dobbin Scholarship Programme which grants awards of short term visiting scholarships to both Irish and Canadian scholars in support of their research which relates to both countries, and the second is the Irish Language Programme which supports the growth and development of the Irish language in Canada.
