"The music of Oh My Goodness is not as much avant-garde funk, pop, or hip hop as much as it is 'worry-core' and 'excite-bike.' The two reasons why you've never heard of these genres before are that, first, the duo made them up, and second, because you've never heard anything like them before. Oh My Goodness is the music baby of Therese Workman and Tyler Wood, both originally from Maine, who met during their cleaning crew work together as freshmen at Harvard. Joining forces in 2010 and eventually becoming Brooklyn-based, the pair released their debut EP, which is both immediately intelligent and highly experimental. Propelled by themes of anxiety, the images that the lyrics conjure are uncomfortable — sharks in swimming pools, financial strain, shadows of trees on your window in the night, crocodiles that kill, the Pope and being stood up, just to name a few. At times, the composition of the songs lend themselves to the eerie musings via minor key instrumentation and dark cinematic undertones, but for the most part, the hip-hop beats and meticulous texturing greatly overshadow all uneasiness, instead inspiring inclinations to either dance it up or dig deeper and/or both.This juxtaposition of nightmares and good vibes is what makes Oh My Goodness so damn engrossing. Bilateral exploration is also part of their creative process, Wood explains, stating that two of their overall rules while recording are 'Maximum fun at all times! Avoid being precious at all costs.' and 'Honor and explore EVERY idea, no matter how much time it takes.' Allowing for total fun and endless exploration in this case leads to deft raps, tight beats, and textured layers. Creating genres to fit their sound instead of choosing a genre that their sound fits into is the entire point here.
