Our History In 2016, we identified a community need for women: a safe space for homeless women and children to go during the day to access showers, laundry, case managers and social services. Founders Andrea and Amy, began a needs assessment by meeting with over 16 service providers and nearly 40 homeless women who were living on the streets and sleeping in the shelters. They were met with overwhelming support and so in 2017 Uniting Partners for Women and Children was founded. Homeless women have very unique needs. Approximately 1 in 4 homeless women are homeless because of her experience with violence. 93% of homeless mothers have experienced at least 1 trauma and 81% have experienced multiple traumatic events with 91% experiencing trauma in both adulthood and childhood. In order for these women to feel safe, they need a space specifically designed for women only. In Louisville there was no day center for only women. Our Mission is to provide a healthy, safe environment for homeless women and children that offers opportunities and encouragement for achieving self-sufficiency. By providing shelter and resource options through a partnership of providers, UP for Women and Children is where homeless women are empowered to find hope, help, and refuge. Our Vision is to ensure safety for single women as well as parenting women and their dependent children who are experiencing homelessness by providing a safe, reliable, and supportive space that offers comprehensive services. By working with additional service providers, we will adequately link women, children, and families to vital supports that they will need to be empowered.
