Operational Research as a subject was first introduced in the regular curriculum of the Department of Marhematics and Mathematical Statistics, University of Delhi way back in the year 1962. A two year post-graduate course in Operational Research was instituted in the Department in 1963. Soon after its introduction, there has been a spurt of research activities in a number of areas of Operational Research. Currently research is being carried out in major areas such as (i) Mathematical Programming (ii) Reliability Theory (iii) Queueing Theory (iv) Inventory Management (v) Networks & Sequencing (vi) Marketing. In the year 1973, the Department of Operational Research was independently set up under the Faculty of Mathematical Sciences. Further, M.Phil. Course was introduced by the Department in 1977. The Department has produced about 50 Ph.D�s and over 80 M.Phil.�s. In 1994, M.A./M.Sc. Course in Applied Operational Research was started at the University of Delhi South Campus. In both M.Sc. Operational Research and M.A./M.Sc. Applied Operational Research Courses, there is a compulsory project work so as to provide practical training to the students, in which they are required to work on a practical problem from Industries and Public Undertakings and submit their findings in the form of a project report for evaluation. Further, Operational Research was introduced as an elective subject at B.Sc. Level in 1996.
