Sustainable Screens Australia is an industry-led initiative that is addressing the growing need to reduce the screen industry's environmental impact. Creating screen content shouldn't be at the expense of the planet, so we're building capacity to measure and reduce our industry's collective environmental footprint. We've consulted with key stakeholders to inform development of a national framework supported by an online hub, customised training and a bespoke carbon calculator tool. This will enable a standardised, supportive approach to embedding sustainability into all aspects of screen production in Australia. The Australian screen industry contributes a large ecological footprint, primarily through electricity and fuel consumption that lead to greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to climate change. We are also intensive consumers of other resources and generate significant amounts of waste. Australia has recently committed to a 43% reduction in Greenhouse Gas emissions by 2030 and to Net Zero by 2050, which means the screen industry is expected to reduce our impact along with all other industries. Drawing on international best practice, SSA's goal is to create and embed standardised practices that bring Australia in line with frameworks that have been widely adopted in North America, the UK, and Europe. By adapting a pre-existing model developed by We Are Albert, we can fast track Australia's commitment. With our ability to reach and influence huge numbers of people, our industry is also uniquely placed to take a leadership role in promoting solutions to the climate crisis.
