Citadel Insurance p.l.c. was established as a public limited company on the 19thof June 1997 and commenced its operations on the 1st of September 1997.On the 9th of March 1998 Citadel became a composite insurance companyafter authorisation by the Malta Financial Services Authority to transact LifeInsurance business.The establishment of Citadel Insurance p.l.c. is a landmark in the history ofinsurance business in Malta, being the first conversion of an insurance agencyinto an insurance company. The company was set-up following a numberof years operating as an insurance agency, Citadel Insurance Services Ltd,established in November 1989. In October 2011, Citadel expanded its product portfolio by establishing itssubsidiary Citadel Health Insurance Agency Ltd enrolled to transact healthinsurance products.
