Abound Food Care is committed to solving two of our country's most pressing challenges: pervasive food insecurity and the increasing effects of climate change. The common thread: food waste. In 2020, a projected 50 million Americans experienced food insecurity—and yet, over 40% of our nation's food never reached people's plates; it ended up in landfills, where it produces harmful methane gas. Founded in 2012 as Waste Not OC, Abound offers a food care model that addresses both challenges. By working with partners to create local food care ecosystems, Abound empowers organizations to recover excess edible food and safely deliver it to people, rather than wasting it. In 2020 alone, Abound's partners recovered over 23 million pounds of food — equivalent to over 19 million meals and 20,000 metric tons of CO 2 emissions avoided locally.
