Although covert, much of this activity is both legal and ethical but it is frequently used for purposes that can seriously damage the subject companies' performance. Conventional security methods rarely detect intelligence gathering that is not out and out espionage. This is because the techniques that are used do not fall outside the law and the intelligence that is sought can never be described as trade secrets or intellectual property.
