In 2006 the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery (Radboud University Medical Centre) initiated the setup of a 3D Lab in order to facilitate the implementation of technological innovations in 3D imaging into daily clinical practice. Since 2013 a research cooperation concerning 3D imaging is initiated with the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery of the Academic Medical Centre, Amsterdam (AMC) and in 2014 University Medical Centre, Groningen (UMCG) joined the collaboration.Besides the clinical practice, we also focus on research in the field of 3D imaging. Since the startup we extended collaborations to other departments like ENT, orthodontics, orthopedics, internal medicine, radiotherapy, neurosurgery, clinical genetics, physical therapy and plastic surgery (reconstructive surgery, mammoplasty and handsurgery). With the use of various 3D imaging modalities (CBCT, CT, MRI and 3D photography) we create digital OR planning and surgical guides that aid the surgeon in the OR. The use of surgical guides and visualizations gives the surgeon a better prediction of the surgical outcome, improved surgical accuracye and in some cases a reduction of the total OR time.We use our experience in the clinical fields of orthognathic surgery, implantology, oncology, trauma, craniosynostose, but also simple things like mirroring or just an STL model of your medical data is possible. By visualizing the medical data and using it during consultation hours it provides patients with better understanding of their disease and the possible treatment solutions.
