St. John's Home for Elderly Persons was established in December 1958, by a group of friends who had then seen the need for a proper Home for needy and homeless elderly persons aged 60 years and above, regardless of race or creed. Its first four dormitories provided shelter and care for about 20 ambulant residents then. Today, the Home has evolved from meeting the elderly's physiological needs of accommodation, meals, laundry and basic medical care, to taking care of the physical, psychological and social needs of more than 90 elderly persons through the provision of regular physiotherapy, counselling and social-recreational programmes. Our mission is to provide shelter and care for elderly persons who have no home, or whose close relatives do not have the means to look after them. The Home is open to all regardless of race or creed. We are a non-funded sheltered Home under the purview of the Ministry of Social and Family Development. Some of our residents pay a monthly upkeep fee, which is lower than the actual cost for taking care of each resident. Others, including those on public assistance, are supported by donations. As a registered charity and an Institution of a Public Character (IPC) status, donations to the Home are eligible for tax exemption. We strive to be a place where old age is cherished and celebrated, because we believe that every life is precious.
