Founded in 1946, Houston Youth Symphony's mission is to recruit, educate, develop and nurture young musicians and provide them the opportunity to train under professional musicians and perform in professionally conducted concerts. Today, HYS has grown to approximately 700 musicians participating in its numerous programs, including a youth orchestra program featuring five ensembles, an annual concerto competition and chamber music program for its advanced players, and two music education outreach efforts for talented youth lacking the socio-economic resources to further their skills. Houston Youth Symphony is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.
