The Sydney Tar Ponds Agency is responsible for implementing one of the largest remediation projects in Canada - the Sydney Tar Ponds and Coke Ovens Cleanup. Located in an urban community, the remediation project is a collection of technologies engineered to contain contamination and to collect and treat groundwater.The Agency is comprised of highly skilled contract managers and project implementers with engineering and environmental backgrounds backed by trained financial and administrative personnel. The Agency and the Project is governed by a $400 million cost-share agreement signed by both the Government of Canada and the Province of Nova Scotia. The Agreement expires March 31st, 2014.Along with bringing this successful project in on time and on budget, the Agency is also tasked with optimizing local benefits in its community. Other priorities are increasing capacity in aboriginal communities, and providing opportunities for African Nova Scotians and women in non-traditional trades and technologies.
