The New England Sustainability Consortium (NEST) is a regional research partnership focused on strengthening the scientific basis for decision-making through sustainability science. NEST is designed to respond to societal challenges where economic and community development goals need to be balanced with environmental protection.NEST's current research initiative, The Future of Dams, is a stakeholder-engaged, solutions-focused, interdisciplinary project focused on the future of dams. Using dams in New England as a model system, collaborators are examining the economic, technological, ecological, social, and political trade-offs associated with different kinds of decisions about dams. The Future of Dams project aims to strengthen connections between scientists and stakeholders and bring the best available research to these complex decisions. The team includes over 70 engineers, economists, hydrologists, fish biologists, social scientists, technicians and students from six New England universities and colleges.Funding for NEST is provided by the National Science Foundation EPSCoR programs (Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research) in Maine, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island.
