The United Way of Lee County has its roots in two very caring communities: Auburn and Opelika, Alabama. Both cities formed United Funds or Community Chests in the mid 1950s to meet the social concerns and needs of their communities. As the neighboring cities continued to grow, the leadership of the two communities looked for ways to improve and maximize philanthropy to those in need. They decided the best way to do this was by merger of the two organizations.
