An Ounce of Nutrition is a sustainable food and nutrition education organization based in Denver, CO. Our Registered Dietitians develop sustainable food and nutrition education programs for schools that is for sale nationwide online. We also offer a teacher-training program in Colorado.Our dream is that kids and youth today will have a future free of chronic diseases such as; heart disease, diabetes, cancer and obesity. Our approach is to share the benefits of consuming more fruits and vegetables, educate students on the value of choosing more "real" and less processed foods and to inspire them to become involved with creating a food system based on health - "healthy people, healthy planet."Through our High School Curriculum program "Food for Thought", we directly impacted close to 1,400 students in our first year. "Food for Thought" explores 10 pertinent topics related to our current food system, including food science, nutrition, and how foods are produced, distributed, marketed, sold, and consumed. It gives students an understanding of how food affects their personal health and the world around them. Our goal is that it will ultimately inspire students to "vote with their forks" and become part of the movement to revolutionize the future of food! An Ounce of Nutrition's "You Are What You Eat" Middle School curriculum addresses 10 pertinent topics related to student health and their food environment. It emphasizes choosing "real" food in every aspect of life, including when playing sports or being active. Students learn about food culture and history, meals and snacks, healthier dining out choices, the importance of fruits and vegetables and reading labels. They also discover the benefits of the integration of choosing "real" food nutrition with physical activity and setting positive emotional habits (e.g. reducing stress).
