He then began trading with other merchandise between companies he had set up in Liverpool and Newfoundland, America. By 1823 Benjamin owned his own wharf and schooner "Charlotte", which enabled him to ship his own goods between the two continents. Benjamin Bowring died in 1846 and was succeeded by his four sons who became known as the "Bowring Brothers".The firm continued to prosper, and over the years built up a substantial number of sailing vessels. It was one of their ships, a 764 tonne whaler, built in Dundee in 1884 that was to be engaged in polar expedition. Her name which became famous throughout the world was ‘Terra Nova'. It was on this vessel in 1910 that Captain Scott left from Cardiff for Christchurch, New Zealand on the ill-fated British Antarctic Expedition. Through the years the Bowring line continued in shipping and then in to the world of insurance. From a small watchmakers shop in Exeter the Bowrings had grown into a range of worldwide companies. Benjamin Bowring Printing is yet another link in the continuing Bowring story.
