Bijl Architecture is an award-winning architecture and design practice based in Sydney, led by director Melonie Bayl-Smith. Contemporary, design-led works include built architectural projects across residential, interiors, commercial and public sectors, with a focus on a collaborative approach to each project working closely with clients, consultants and builders. The practice's design philosophy identifies that inherent flexibility and intentional longevity are key to creating sustainable architecture, from the viewpoints of aesthetics, functionality, economy and the total environment. Bijl Architecture's demonstrated expertise and experience ranges from new buildings to alterations and additions, refurbishment and fitouts, adaptive/heritage work and project/site masterplanning. In addition to its award-winning residential work, Bijl Architecture undertakes commercial, education, public, religious and community projects, as well as creating objects, installations and other experimental work. Alongside built work projects, Bijl Architecture participates in architectural education and in academic and design research, with teaching expertise that embraces the design studio, history and theory, construction, digital fabrication and design, and professional practice. Current research concerns are centred on innovative modes of practice. Bijl Architecture is heavily involved with the broader architectural profession, with ongoing contributions in the areas of teaching, talks and seminars, mentoring, research, professional committees and community groups. Bijl is pronounced "bayl" and is the surname of Melonie Bayl-Smith's Dutch grandfather, who anglicised the name to ‘Bayl' when the family moved to Australia in the 1950s.
