The business was started by Mel Riegsecker in the garage of his home in 1980, where he made miniature horse-drawn carriages, buggies and other vehicles for sale. The company has since grown into Blue Gate Hospitality; with 8 operating businesses including The Blue Gate Restuarant & Bakery, The Blue Gate Theatre, Shipshewana Craft Barn, Shipshewana Furniture Co., Traditions by Shipshewana Furniture, Blue Gate Tours, Blue Gate Carriage Company, and The Blue Gate Garden Inn.
