The mission of HealthNewsReview.org is to improve the public dialogue about health care by helping consumers critically analyze claims about health care interventions and by promoting the principles of shared decision-making reinforced by accurate, balanced and complete information about the tradeoffs involved in health care decisions. HealthNewsReview.org evaluates health care journalism, advertising, marketing, public relations, medical journal practices and other pathways by which media messages about health care interventions reach the public. Because the dissemination of information from any of these pathways may influence consumers, our project provides criteria that consumers can use to evaluate these messages themselves. Improving the quality and flow of health care news and information to consumers can be a significant step towards meaningful health care reform. We celebrate our 10th anniversary in 2016. We have published more than 4,500 articles - systematic, criteria-driven reviews and grading of health care news stories and health care PR news releases, and blog posts that discuss editorial or ethical issues in other forms of media messages mentioned above. Our decade of reviewing thousands of media messages documents a clear pattern of unsatisfactory messages about the costs of interventions, about how often potential benefits occur, and about how often potential harms occur. We offer training to journalists and health care communicators. In fact, there are thousands of lessons posted online in the articles and reviews we've published.
