Musoni BV is a social enterprise that establishes best-practice microfinance institutions and uses technology to lower costs, reduce risk and improve efficiency. In 2009, Musoni set up the first cashless Microfinance Institution (MFI) in the world, using mobile payments for all transactions. Since then, Musoni Kenya has disbursed close to 50,000 loans to micro entrepreneurs with a total value of $12m. In the year 2011 Musoni won the award for ‘most innovative use of technology' at the Global Microfinance Achievement Awards in Geneva. Musoni BV is now looking to expand its operations into multiple countries, to continue developing its innovative IT platform and to also make its functionalities and services available to third parties. Once Musoni BV has established an MFI, it then provides IT, funding and advisory services (the Musoni System), enabling the MFIs to reduce their costs, improve their efficiency, and focus entirely on their operations.
