ELEM- Youth in Distress is Israel's premier nonprofit organization addressing at-risk youth. ELEM seeks to locate and rehabilitate these teens and young adults and reintegrate them as productive members of society. The teens ELEM meets face a broad range of distress from normative adolescent crises and school attrition through much more complex situations, including social and family issues, questions relating to sexual identity, religious identity, drug and alcohol abuse, violence, criminal behavior, sexual exploitation, sexual abuse, and homelessness. ELEM specializes in identifying the hardships facing young people in Israel, and in developing innovative and relevant responses tailored to different populations.Every night, thousands of teens and young adults roam public parks, town squares, hangouts, and hideouts. Volunteers and staff on ELEM's outreach vans offer immediate humanitarian assistance, sometimes as basic as instant noodles and blankets. ELEM's vans also set up in known hotspots and serve as a base for one-on-one meetings, access to phones, brochures, and first aid.
