Coordinator at Center for Advanced Research in Drying - , Massachusetts, United States
At the Center for Advanced Research in Drying (CARD) we work closely with industry, educational researchers and members to provide energy-efficient drying Innovations that enhance industrial competitiveness. We specifically focus on solutions for consumer product goods like food and agricultural products; forestry products; chemical products; textiles; and biopharmaceuticals. CARD is a National Science Foundation (NSF) sponsored Industry University Cooperative Research Center (IUCRC). It was founded in 2016 by two leading educational institutions - Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) in Worcester, Massachusetts (lead institution) and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. NSF funded CARD as the first center in the United States dedicated to developing energy-efficient technologies for drying moist, porous materials.Drying of moist, porous materials is one of the most energy-intensive processes in manufacturing, and existing processes account for a significant portion of all of the energy used by U.S. manufacturing. The environmental impact is significant. It is for this reason that CARD was founded. It is helping businesses meet social responsibility mandates — and possible future regulatory requirements — by developing breakthrough processes that reduce this adverse environmental impact. Some of our current research projects include:* Novel drying technologies such as ultrasound and electrohydrodynamic drying * Leveraging existing technologies in new ways such as re-designed nozzles and concentration processes* Development of novel sensors and smart technologies as applied to drying operations. To learn more about our research, our members, and what membership means to them, please visit our website at dryingresearch.org.
