THE CHALLENGEHuman well-being and the health of the environment are inextricably linked. Solutions to improve the lives of people and preserve the world's last wild places must account for this interdependency, if impact is to last. As critical, is the need for indigenous and local communities, who live near, depend on, and steward wild places, to lead local change. The reality is, however, that many conservation and development initiatives are siloed, and past community engagement has been largely for indigenous and local people or even offered to them, but not fully with them. It is time for a change.LEGADO'S RADICAL APPROACHLegado is not a conservation organization. Nor is it a development organization. We are a Thriving Futures organization and do not limit our focus to single sectors like environment, health, sustainable livelihoods or education. Instead, we work with local people to prioritize what their community and environment need to thrive together now and into the future – an ultimate goal we call Thriving Futures.We do this by activating the power of legacy. Individuals begin by developing their own vision for a Thriving Future. Then they work to integrate these with their broader communities and other partners to arrive at collaborative visions and action plans.We bring our Thriving Futures approach to the world's last wild places – important for biodiversity and local communities and vulnerable to climate change. We are unafraid to work in these remote, challenging, and often threatened "last mile" places, where local people typically rely heavily on surrounding natural resources and face serious challenges like food insecurity and limited access to healthcare, education and economic opportunities. GLOBAL PROGRAMSLegado works in Mozambique and Kenya and is launching new sites in 2022. Our goal is that by 2030, the Legado Model is driving Thriving Futures in more than a dozen high-value landscapes.
