Nya'Kan Afrika is a Kenyan design brand founded by Di Achieng that focuses on the recovery and the re-use of materials to create and handcraft high quality fashion bags for the eco-conscious consumer. Through her network in Nairobi, Di receives waste cement packaging materials which, through a slum program, are washed and treated without the use of chemicals to be used as the main body of her bag designs. The cement bags are lined internally with hard-wearing 100% waxed cotton canvas and the highest quality vegetable tanned Kenyan leather providing the handles, straps and base support. In combination, these strong materials give an urban or industrial feel for a uniquely stylish product. Nya'Kan Afrika contracts the production to a team of Kenyan artisans who are highly skilled in the hand crafting of bags made from leather materials. The use of specially treated leather and heavy duty hand cast brass hardware are consistent with all Nya'kan Afrika designs. Due to the printing of the original cement manufacturer's bag, each up-cycled Nya'Kan Afrika designed bag exhibits an individual finish giving a truly unique product.
