Out of the Woods was founded by woodcarver Darrell Janssen in 1997. For more than 20 years, he has foundwoodcarving to be an enjoyable means of creative expression. A self-taught carver focusing primarily on chipcarving, Darrell's carvings are influenced by nature's beauty and he specializes in traditional form and a morenatural free form that he has developed to carve wildflowers, Featured in Woodcarving Illustrated, Spring 2006. Desiring to chip carve wildflowers, he felt artisically dissatisfied with the end result using existing free form chip carving methods. Because of this he developed a new more natural and unrestrained chip carving process that captures a true and realistic image of natures beauty. He continues to evolve his method and his designs to create carvings of other natural subjects. In May 2001, Darrell was juried in as member of the Illinois Artisans Program. His carvings were displayed andsold at their locations in Illinois. His chip-carved crosses were also featured at the Vesterheim Museum inDecorah, Iowa. He has designed more than 30 crosses and has made them from 2 inches to 8 feet in length.
