Helping Women Lead the Male-Dominated WorkplaceFor decades women have tried to reach parity with men in the business world but keep falling short. To get ahead, we were told to act more like men or to become one of the boys because it is male traits that are valued in the business world. From this perspective it is no wonder women aren't getting anywhere. The fundamental problem is that we never quite understood what women really bring to business. We continuously hear how women contribute collaboration, relationship and team building but in the male-dominated workplace those are niceties. Having spent 30 years in non-traditional roles in male-dominated industries I learned what women truly offer and how even just one woman can drive company performance upward. The key to company performance is to have male and female traits work in balance with each other. Instead of a pink (female) and blue (male) perspective, companies need to operate in what I call the Purple Zone – a balance of traits. A woman who understands the full scope of her attributes can lead her male-dominated workplace to higher levels of performance.I consult with both companies and individual women.
