Dance Educator At ChezaCheza Dance Foundation at ChezaCheza Dance Foundation - Nairobi, Nairobi, Kenya
ChezaCheza means playful in Swahili. What do we do? We use dance in a unique way to create a safe space for being creative and learning essential life skills in Kenya. We provide an after-school dance program that focuses on life skills education through dance. We give children a safe space to be creative, develop life skills and provide guidance through mentorship to help them make more informed life choices.Young children in urban informal settlements face different challenges, which include drug abuse, involvement in gangs and crime, school drop-outs and teen pregnancies. Life skills education can support children to navigate the challenges they face. However, many children lack after-school activities in their neighbourhood where they feel safe and are surrounded by positive role models. ChezaCheza recruits local dancers and provides them with training to become life skill trainers and provide an after-school dance program in their area. This is how local ‘dance hubs' are established and how more children get access to life skills education.
