At End Cyber Abuse, we see image-based sexual abuse as a violation of women's human rights to live free from gender-based violence (GBV) and discrimination, and to enjoy rights to privacy and bodily autonomy. Image-based sexual abuse must be criminalized, and allegations must be investigated and, where appropriate, prosecuted. Laws must also offer victims with civil remedies that enable compensation for harm and loss — like the loss of wages, a job, a home and/or emotional suffering. Not only that, civil and/or criminal laws must enable victims to easily have the non-consensual images or videos removed from the internet.We've conducted research on the criminal and civil laws that address image-based sexual abuse in 10 countries. We've spoken to advocates across these countries to understand the gaps in the law, challenges that victims face on the ground, and gaps in the implementation of these laws.Not only that, we've isolated key elements of "good practices" in terms of effective legal response to image-based sexual abuse crimes and how these can be adopted to end gendered cyber abuse once and for all.
