Founded in 1993, CIHRS is an independent regional non-governmental organisation that works to ensure respect for human rights and democratic principles throughout the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). CIHRS' primary mission is to protect and empower the human rights movement within the MENA region, through but not limited to:-providing analysis on challenges facing the application of international human rights and humanitarian law-engaging cross cultural dialogue regarding international human rights treaties and declarations-developing and promoting changes to policies and practices, bringing them in line with international human rights standards-capacity building for practitioners involved in rights based reform and accountability measures-human rights education for young activists and established human rights defenders-human rights advocacy at national, regional levels and through international human rights mechanisms.CIHRS is a publisher of cutting-edge content on human rights in the MENA region. The institute's publications include a magazine, an academic quarterly and scores of books dealing with the human rights landscape in the region. A key component of CIHRS' mandate is to shape the understanding of and discourse around the most pressing human rights issues in the MENA region. The institute is a catalyst in mobilising and coordinating key players and NGOs across the MENA region to partner in raising public awareness and in devising solutions in line with the standards of international human rights law.CIHRS enjoys consultative status with the United Nations ECOSOC and observer status with the African Commission for Human and Peoples' Rights. Membership of the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Network (EMHRN) and of the International Freedom of Expression Exchange (IFEX). CIHRS was awarded the French Republic Award for Human Rights in December 2007.CIHRS has established offices in Cairo, Tunis, Brussels, Paris, Geneva and New York.
