Founded in 1947 by the Optimist Club of Downtown Houston and many of Houston's leading business professionals, Boys & Girls Harbor has been committed to its mission of providing charitable, comprehensive, long-term residential care in a home setting for children 5 to 18 years of age who are victims of abuse, neglect, abandonment, or family hardship, since day one. While initially serving young boys only, Boys & Girls Harbor provides a safe haven to boys and girls in need, regardless of race, creed, color, or financial status. Furthermore, the Harbor not only provides residential care in a family setting thanks to its compassionate house parents and the cottages the children live in, but also keeps families together in the first place, taking in sibling units so they don't have to separate from each other. Boys & Girls Harbor's residential care, beginning with its trained, full-time, live-in house parents and its comfortable, but spacious, cottage homes, is just the beginning of how the organization provides stability, support and both short- and long-term residential care for the children it serves. In addition to the rooves over their heads, the Harbor kids are cared for in all aspects of their lives, thanks to several additional programs found at the facility, including, but not limited to the following: The Harbor Academy charter school, athletics and team sports, FFA/Agriculture program, life skills program for teenagers, summer programs, host family volunteers, and counseling services. Boys & Girls Harbor's impact on the thousands of children it has served since opening its doors nearly 70 years ago, is not only seen during their time living, learning and studying, playing, being fed and clothed, and engaging in family life at the Harbor, but through the successful lives they lead after they leave the Harbor.
